SDG 7 startup of the week: Watts Battery

"WATTS Battery gives an opportunity for everyone to be energy independent. " said the founder Yuriy Vlasov.

Our member WATTS Battery provides a smart, portable energy storage that combines all the functionalities of a large, stationary energy storage system in one modular case.

The founder of WATTS Battery, Yuriy Vlasov, shared the story of how the idea of WATTS Battery came to life:

“Since childhood, I have been interested in the question of how to make a person’s life independent of electric networks. We all know that there is an independent source of electricity — a generator. I realized that if we manage to combine the stationary part and the mobility and simplicity of generators in one product, we can globally present the product in a competitive environment. With this idea, the project of creating portable energy storage began.

Our project started back in 2015 when during my MBA classes at the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, we arrived in Silicon Valley as a part of the foreign program module. At that time we were working on an autonomous energy supply project, and we needed energy storage. We decided to purchase the Tesla Power Pack (commercial version of Tesla Power Wall) but found out that despite the abundance of pre-orders, the product would not enter the market until the end of 2016. Then we decided not to waste time waiting in line but create our own energy storage. If Elon Musk could do it, why couldn’t we? That is when we decided to create WATTS Battery.

We spent six months attending exhibitions and conferences and studying the market. The most important discovery for us was that despite the abundance of announced projects, there were no finished products on the market.

After analyzing the proposals, we decided not to make another Power Wall, but to go further — to create a product accessible to a wide range of consumers. We wanted it to have all the necessary components in one module as well as have intuitive control and the ability to be scaled as LEGO.

Our main goal is to create a new market for the use of energy. We aim to transfer the use of electricity from wires to personal energy modules that will create an ecosystem of power supply around itself. Our client is a person far from the electric power industry, who can use WATTS not only to power the house, but take the module with him. For example, the power of one module is enough for eight hours to watch a movie, listen to music, or hold an entire event. And all this without bulky noisy generators, which in this case must be refueled from time to time.

You recently celebrated 4 years. What changed?

We are proud to say that our company follows the same principles as 4 years ago. We wanted to give people an instrument to be proactive in environmental matters — and we succeeded. The main idea of our product is to create interfaces for technologies that allow people to benefit from these technologies.

WATTS Battery gives an opportunity for everyone to be energy independent. Our device simplifies the access to solar energy without involving a contractor. Now switching to solar energy is much easier!

Yuriy Vlasov, the founder of WATTS Battery, comments, “We want create products based on technologies that people can use. And we want to continue to create new products based on technologies that allow anyone to achieve full autonomy, whether in the desert, in the city or on Mars. There should be a set of some devices that completely cover your needs for comfort. We are all city dwellers accustomed to the comfort, which is why we always need electricity. Electricity is the foundation of everything.”

Our corporate culture is similar to the one of Silicon Valley. There are no rules, we have people fully involved in the process, and no one tells anyone what to do. A team is selected so that each person knows what to do, and is an expert in his field. Having a team of such creative and enthusiastic people is amazing but it comes with its own issues. For example, adding corporate rules into such systems slows them down a lot.
