SDG 13 startup of the week: Rebel Meat

"One of the most effective things to reduce our carbon footprint is to eat less and better meat, and that’s why we created Rebel Meat" said the co-founder Philipp Stangl.

02.04.2020.

What ways do you know to make a positive change for our climate? How often do you think about what you eat? Our startup of the week can give you some guidelines.

Rebel Meat develops delicious meat products that only need 50% meat for a 100% meat experience - that way their products are way more healthy and climate-friendly than conventional meat products. They use only natural and 100% organic ingredients and no additives whatsoever.

We talked to Philipp Stangl, Co-Founder Rebel Meat who told us more about them.

"Our products attract meat-lovers who want to enjoy meat without feeling bad about the environment and without compromising for taste or eating highly processed meat replacement products. We are currently selling to selected top gastronomers and will soon be available in wholesale.

At Rebel Meat, we're basically building a real, viable option for meat lovers, that have a hard time ordering a vegan meal but still would like to reduce their meat consumption because they too read newspapers and watch Greta Thunberg on Facebook... It's the real deal - 100% meat experience with just 50% meat. The rest is all-natural, high-quality plant-based ingredients. The whole product is 100% organic and always sourced "regionally" and transparently. Those two things (taste and natural, organic ingredients) set us apart from meat replacement products. "

How are you working towards achieving the SDGs?

"We have an immediate impact on SDGs 12 and 13 by helping 90% of the population who are meat-eaters, to eat less and better meat without compromising quality and taste. Our burger patties save 1.4kg CO2e compared to a conventional one. That’s because we use only 50% meat, but also because the meat we use is 100% organic, regional and without imported feed.

In the long-term, our blended meat technology will enable the market entrance of cultivated meat since it will make the products consumer-grade and affordable, which will further increase our positive impact.

We are selling to selected top gastronomers directly and via wholesale; in the future, we will also be targeting the end-consumer directly in the retail channel."

Why was creating such a solution important to you?

“Contributing to SDG 13, Climate Action, is in our view especially important because it has knock-on effects on most other SDGs. There is no “Planet B” and without a liveable Planet Earth, we won’t be able to achieve many of the other goals. One of the most effective things to reduce our carbon footprint is to eat less and better meat, that’s why we created Rebel Meat.”, concluded Philipp Stangl, Co-Founder Rebel Meat.
