SDG 3: Hanai’s JiwaIbu app provides an m-health ecosystem for women worldwide

The Jiwa Ibu mobile app gives women instant access to locally-focused healthcare information that is medically validated and approved by ministries of health, as well as symptom checkers, trackers, alerts, and instant chats with physicians.

23.05.2020.

Hanai, a global healthcare company empowering women in rural and marginalized communities by providing easily accessible healthcare information and education, today announced the launch of the beta version of their Jiwa Ibu app for Android platforms in English and Malay. The app is currently in beta testing mode and the company is mobilizing communities in Malaysia and seeking additional communities for early testing of the app.

The Jiwa Ibu mobile app gives women instant access to locally-focused healthcare information that is medically validated and approved by ministries of health, as well as symptom checkers, trackers, alerts, and instant chats with physicians.

Tell us what is the Jiwa Ibu app?

"Today, many women lack access to basic healthcare information. There is no formal authority on sharing this information and sadly many women do not know what to do in an emergency.

Jiwa Ibu is a step towards change. The Jiwa Ibu app by Hanai gives women instant access to locally-focused health information that is medically validated and approved by ministries of health, doctor's directories, the latest news on COVID-19 and surveys. With a simple smartphone, women will have the ability to take charge of their health and their family’s health.

In the future, Jiwa Ibu will also be for healthcare workers. They will have access to instructional training videos, online courses, patient education materials and other resources to help improve the capacity of health workers to deliver effective service to their communities."

Who stands behind the project?

"The original idea for Hanai came from founder Shamala Hinrichsen spending four months mapping the rural healthcare dissemination landscape in India followed by two weeks in Mozambique. A scientist by training, Shamala built her career communicating healthcare, moving into healthcare policy. Team Hanai formed with the expertise of a team of various skills, from many countries who have a common goal - to see the social impact, especially in healthcare. Deepa Shiva and Bryan Ly joined as co-founders. Patrizia Luchetta contributes to strategy. Elisabeth Busch is our data management expert while Vincent Chu is our content and communications expert. Sanjiv Gnaneswaran, works on risk and governance while managing Hanai’s finances and two interns Natalia Velasco and Milan von Estorff are on a journey of learning and contributing. We are committed to building grassroots level championing and our first teammate from the community is Agnes Kam, who's personal story is a reason why team Hanai shifted focus to Malaysia, to begin with. Our team is supported immensely by an array of experts in their field - too many to mention and very much valued. "

In what ways has your job been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?

"With the pandemic that is upon us, Hanai plays a greater role than ever. Ensuring women get localized news on COVID-19 in their local languages, establishing quick actions with domestic violence, besides knowing where to go to seek help.

But, we are challenged with our community champions being in lockdown and unable to see the women we serve in person. So there has been a shift to more technological responses." said Ms. Hinrichsen.
