SDG 4 startup of the week: Inoma

"Inoma's TAK-TAK-TAK learning game is an educational solution to improve elementary education in Latin America and the world. Our goal is that any child in the world can access quality education, in order to help reduce inequality and poverty." said the founder Antonio Purón

29.05.2020.

Inoma is a non-profit organization based in Mexico City, which concept and operations began in 2009, but was officially founded in February 2011. The main goal is to get children to learn by themselves and reaffirm knowledge and abilities in a fun way through the use of technology. That’s how in 2009, Antonio Purón, Inoma’s founder, began working on educational tools, specifically educational video games, that accomplish this goal.

The TAK-TAK-TAK video games have been successfully proved and were created to provide elementary students the opportunity to improve their digital knowledge, skills, and competencies through personalized learning while being supported by parents and teachers thanks to personalized feedback.

Tell us more about your work and TAK-TAK-TAK video games!

Nowadays, 100 TAK-TAK-TAK video games have been developed and more than 60 are available in the taktaktak.com website as well as in online stores as apps for Android, and iOS operating system; they cover subjects such as mathematics, Spanish, science, visual arts, history, music, ethics, and financial education. Offline solutions such as TAK-USB and TAK-Server, have also been developed. By the time Inoma develops 200 educational video games, the entire Mexican Ministry of Education’s curriculum will be covered,  giving children the chance to spend their spare time playing and learning all relevant subjects.

As part of this video game appropriation strategy Inoma developed LabTak, a platform for parents and teachers, that offers them recreational educational information and a planner for integrating TAK-TAK-TAK and other digital tools in their teaching.

By May 15, 2020, TAK-TAK-TAK had 621,504 children registered, which come mainly from Mexico;  the LabTak platform had over 22,350 teachers and/or parents registered by then.

Inoma works with with different donors and allies to develop new video games and take the TAK-TAK-TAK System to new public schools and beneficiaries. Along with the donor or ally, Inoma’s team designs a personalized intervention program for schools; then proceed to the implementation which consists in: 1) revision and adjustment of computer equipment, 2) technical-pedagogical training and 3) help desk.

That way Inoma makes sure that the computers available have the necessary requirements, and that teachers and people responsible of media classrooms know how to use and browse through TAK-TAK-TAK, LabTak and its respective reports. With these measures, the use of video games and informative reports as part of the didactic planning, is assured.

Inoma proudly shares that TTAK-TAK-TAK has won several international awards and acknowledgements such as: best mobile content in learning and education by the World Summit Award contest, best innovative content by WeWork's Creator Awards Mexico, honorary mention for TAK-TAK-TAK's science video games by Ciencia en Acción, finalist in the innovative education contest by WISE Awards 2018, regional winner of Latin America for being an innovative project directed towards improving the learning results for students by Reimagine Education and finalist in the E-Learning category, also by Reimagine Education.

Why would you say SDGs are important?

"Education is a priority as a fundamental human right. Its fulfillment contributes to guarantee other rights. In that order, having access to education, and even more, one with quality becomes a catalyst to reduce poverty and improve the well-being and life quality of individuals. Achieving quality education is everyone's responsibility. Inoma, from the third sector, joins the Agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 of the UN, particularly with Objective number 4, specifically in Goal 4.4: the United Nations wants to substantially increase the technological capabilities required for the world of work. For this reason, Inoma offers an important tool for students to improve these skills through the use of video games and allows teachers to have an updated platform to teach classes with new technologies.

In addition, we are also convinced of the importance of acquiring the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to face the challenges of work and life. Therefore, we also seek to promote 21st Century Skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, among others. TAK-TAK-TAK is an educational solution to improve elementary education in Latin America and the world. Through a learning system based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), we promote quality learning through game strategy. Our goal is that any child in the world can access quality education, in order to help reduce inequality and poverty."

What are your plans for the future?

Inoma is redesigning LabTak in order to allow teachers to choose and/or develop pedagogical strategies (their planning) based on digital educational content. For this, the new site will include a library of diverse digital educational resources previously curated by our pedagogical team to facilitate and optimize the strategy design. Through LabTtak, teachers will be able choose educational content and add them into their strategies; they will also be able to choose the predesigned strategy, created by the LabTak team, that best adapts to their students’ needs.

This first concept of LabTak will be launched in 2020 in order to help teachers design their plans in an efficient and effective way. We are looking forward to evaluating it.
