SDG 9: Telecom Infra Project is driving change in telecom network infrastructure

"The collective aim of our community is to collaborate on building new technologies, examining new business approaches, and spurring investment in the telecom space."

02.07.2020.

"The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is a global community of companies and organizations that are driving infrastructure solutions to advance global connectivity. Half of the world’s population is still not connected to the internet, and for those who are, connectivity is often insufficient. This limits access to the multitude of consumer and commercial benefits provided by the internet, thereby impacting GDP growth globally. However, a lack of flexibility in the current solutions – exacerbated by a limited choice in technology providers – makes it challenging for operators to efficiently build and upgrade networks.

Telecom Infra Project is accelerating the pace of innovation in the telecom industry by bringing the industry together to design, build, and deploy telecom technologies.
The collective aim of our community is to collaborate on building new technologies, examining new business approaches, and spurring investment in the telecom space. Between our Project Groups, Labs, and TIP Ecosystem Acceleration Centers (TEACs), we are driving change in each of these areas.

Founded in 2016, TIP is a community of diverse members that includes hundreds of companies – from service providers and technology partners to systems integrators and other connectivity stakeholders. We are working together to develop, test, and deploy open, disaggregated, and standards-based solutions that deliver the high-quality connectivity that the world needs – now and in the decades to come."

Last year they organized an amazing summit.

"The Telecom Infra Project community gathered in Amsterdam for our fourth annual TIP Summit, bringing together service providers, technology providers, systems integrators, startups, investors, analysts, and a wide variety of other ecosystem partners. Much has changed since our first TIP Summit four years ago. What started as an effort with a handful of members has expanded to an organization with hundreds of active member companies, a diverse collection of project groups that cover the entire telecom network, and active deployments of solutions in many markets globally. Two years ago, technology prototypes were being a lab and field-tested with several RFIs issued. Today, solutions are available commercially and being deployed in service provider networks, with rising demand from many service providers around the world."

How are they, as a community, contributing to SDG9?

"Our community is designing, building, and bringing to market solutions that service providers are telling us they need for all types of use cases and geographies. The scope of this work spans dense urban environments to ultra-rural areas and some of the most advanced telecom markets through those that have significant unconnected populations.

We know that working together and leveraging a diverse range of approaches from across the industry will lead to the greatest success, and we have already seen substantial progress on many of our initiatives. On behalf of TIP, we are excited to collaborate on these efforts in the years ahead, continuing to transform ideas for better telecom tech into commercial solutions. We expect more solutions to be deployed in 2020 and beyond, helping to achieve our shared goal of driving better and broader connectivity globally.

If you share our goal of accelerating the pace of innovation in the telecom industry, consider joining the over 500 Member organizations who are working to make this vision a reality."
