SDG10 startup of the week: Mother To Many Children

Reducing the inequality of health and wellbeing through seeking life-sustainability, especially for women and children.

Inequality persists and large disparities remain regarding access to health and education services and other assets, especially in developing countries. MTMC team decided to stop that.

The story of 'Mother To Many Children Association':

Mother to Many Children Association wants to see families thriving, parents, especially widowed mothers, with skill-sets that generate income, which in turn sees children clothed, fed and schooled to their senior years - not by strangers across continents, but by their own family. 

Officially registered in September of 2017, Mother to Many Children was started in Busia, Uganda, to meet the overwhelmingly evident need to address holistic wellbeing, health, education and social support for families in the area. ​The vision started with an Australian Mama's desire to see not only children sponsored, but also to see families assisted to become fully independent from support, then helping their own communities to continue to grow sustainably. Once the vision was shared, the local community took hold of it.

Since its start, Mother to Many Children (MTMC) has been in local Busia areas including Masafu, Majanji and Sikuda to name a few, providing:

• Seed to 600+ widows
• Mattresses to orphans
• Educational materials for orphans
• Clothed numerous family communities of widows and orphans
• Provided & assisted local family communities with raising sows, and
• Introduced Perma-gardens for long-term food sustainability

Ongoing research and data collection in the local communities continue to refine and direct the projects that are undertaken. Long-term projects include an aquaponics garden and wood trade school. The community is right behind the vision too. A couple of families have even donated land to be used for a children’s education center, and training facilities when finances become available.

For the MTMC team, reducing the inequality of health and wellbeing through seeking life-sustainability, especially for women and children, who have no opportunity to gain it independently, is a matter of the heart. Loving our fellow citizens is as simple as lending a hand – whatever that looks like. We know that small changes can make big ripple-effect changes, and that’s why we are working together for each other.
