SDG4 Startup of the week: FunKe Science

Science is not only manageable but very easy and fun!

01.02.2020.

Science can be fun, and FunKe knows it!
Meet the second startup of the SDG4 week - FunKe Science, a team made of science enthusiasts and teachers, who are passionate about science. The team conducts science experiments and tutorials for children between the ages of 3 to 18.
"Our experiments are interactive and encourage children to ask all sorts of questions about science and also to participate in our wide variety of experiments. Through these experiments, we teach children the value of science in our daily lives, and that science is not only manageable but very easy and fun. Our experiments are tailored towards providing children with the necessary information and interest that they will require to pursue science-based careers later in their lives. The experiments are simple and use common materials that everyone can identify with.
We are also working towards bringing math and science to school children in fun and exciting ways via online classes, camps, clubs and events with the aim of encouraging students to love and practice science."

FunKe Science is working on a platform that works on promoting and educating the masses on science matters both online and offline. The term FunKe Science comes from the words funky Kenyan science which is an upbeat way of saying we love doing science in a fun and interesting way.

What is your motivation and how do you do it?
"In order to bring out the practical part of science, our goal is to carry out experiments explaining different concepts of science. So that children can find science both fun and interesting.

Our objective is to have practical sessions (which will run for 45 - 60 minutes) and science kits for children in various elementary schools. These sessions will have activities such as experiments, which the children will be actively involved in.
We will also have an online platform, where children, teachers, and parents will access all our experiments, tutorials, and also play games and quizzes that will test how well they have understood a topic or concept. One can also access videos explaining various science concepts on the online platform." said the co-founder Tracey Shiundu.

Tracey Shiundu is the Co-founder of FunKe Science, a platform that seeks to promote interactive learning of science among school children, through fun activities, experiments, and tutorials using simple and common household materials that they can identify with. She believes in teaching children the value of science in our daily lives, and that science is not only manageable but very easy and fun. She is passionate about science and hoping to get kids, especially girls, interested in science. She firmly believes that: "If we teach today's students as we taught yesterday's, we rob them of tomorrow" (John Dewey).
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Nairobi and a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Project Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and another Masters of Science Degree in Environmental Chemistry at the University Of Nairobi
