SDG4 Startup of the week: HAS Robotics

HAS Robotics is developing robotic arms for education to help students and other individuals interested in robotics to have good quality practical education with design and software that are customizable according to users' needs and wishes.

29.01.2020.

This week we are focusing on #SDG4 and providing quality education to all. But as time changes, the needs of the equipment used in education needs to change, too. One of our members, Has Robotics does exactly that.

The company’s main product is the robotic arm HAS_One, whose design and software are fully adjusted to the needs of practical education so that each student gets opportunity to learn how to control a robotic arm. Their mission is to popularize robotics in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region and to provide high-quality products in the field of robotics.

The story of Has Robotics

The story of Has Robotics begins in, Brčko, the hometown of the founder Haris Salkic, where he attended Secondary Technical School, department for Mechatronic. By pursuing this very direction, he discovered his love for innovation. Harris made the first robot arm out of wood, mostly because of his curiosity and desire to "peek" into the world of robotics. The professors were the first audience to recognize this young man's abilities, so he was sent to a national technical science competition, in which he won the first place, thereby gaining faith in himself, which is crucial in building a career. Arriving in Sarajevo, Harris's talent gained special significance because he joined a group of people with whom he shares similar interests, and with his knowledge helped them to develop a program and thus became part of their team. Through working with this group, he learned how to use a 3D printer, which is his job today. With a robotic arm designed and named HAS_One, he has applied to the Start-UP Challenge Sarajevo Business Forum (SBF) Business Ideas Contest.

Making a real robotic arm, young Harris delighted the jury and won the first place. He used the money that was the reward for his work in a specific way — by purchasing a 3D printer that he uses today to create new robotic hands. The purpose of making a robotic arm is to use it as a teaching aid in primary and secondary schools. Due to better working conditions, he joined IUS this year at the Mechanical Engineering Department. In the coming year, Harris plans to begin mass production of this product of his imagination, effort, and work, and IUS is here to support the work of this talented guy. At the moment his only partner in the business is his sister Samra, and he is very proud of her.

“HAS Robotics will be the first company of its kind in southeastern Europe. There are two companies like ours in France and one in Great Britain”, said CEO Haris.

You recently received funds from the Institute mladi.org. How helpful will that be for Has Robotics?

“The support we got from the Institute and the Embassy of Sweden is very important, and we plan on using those funds to further develop our business”, says this young entrepreneur, adding that his first launch is planned for the beginning of April. Haris says that the company is receiving pre-orders and has already sold several robotic arms.

Although robotics is not too popular in Bosnia and Hercegovina, Haris says that the public is very interested in his idea. The support he got from the public encouraged him to continue and showed that he is on the right track with his business idea.

“We are always talking about the fourth digital revolution and this is the first step for that. It is really important to have, in the teaching process, instruments to educate young people for jobs of the future, and our goal is to make those instruments accessible to everyone. My message to all young people is - Never give up on your dreams. Work hard and give it your all, and success is sure to come.” Concluded the founder of HasRobotics, Haris Salkic.
